Description:
The methods of building bridges between DNA sequence and phenotype can be broadly categorized into two major groups: (i) dry lab (in silico) approaches, which are based on reanalyzing (publicly) available biomedical datasets in order to unravel functional mechanisms underlying complex phenotypes, and (ii) wet lab (in vitro or in vivo) approaches, which are based on classic laboratory methods of working on cell lines, animal models, or human samples. Obviously, dry lab (in silico) approaches are faster, easier, and cheaper compared to wet lab approaches and hence should be tried first. The findings of dry lab studies can subsequently be backed up by further wet lab experiments. Here we discuss the need and potential of in silico approaches to unravel the multifaceted genomic mechanisms controlling complex traits or diseases.
 
One important limitation of genomic studies is that the identified SNPs are not necessarily causally related to their associated traits or diseases. Hence identifying associated SNPs does not necessarily provide sufficient information on the biological mechanisms or pathways underlying their corresponding phenotype. Therefore, it is essential to perform additional systems biology steps to translate the findings of genomic studies into biological knowledge.
In this workshop, we will mainly cover the theoretical background of the abovementioned systems biology approaches. A few exercises of appropriate software tools will also be provided, based on the outcome of the theoretical sessions.
